The human being is an emotional sculpture, which laughs, cries and smiles. It is hence psychological suffering that brings people to a plastic surgeon. Michelangelo said: “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” Plastic surgery too can release the patient from his/her complex by surgically improving on physical disorders, defects, or imperfections. Once, Anatomy was considered as destiny. Today, plastic surgery can influence that destiny positively.
Plastic surgeons imbibe operating techniques from their surgery teachers, but the harmony of proportions they must learn from the great sculptors – from Michelangelo, Leonardo, Rodin and Dalí – and also from countless painters. Aesthetic plastic surgery must strive to achieve the highest possible harmony between body and soul… “ harmonia suprema lex.”

When I was a young student in medical college I read “The Right To Look Human” the life story of plastic surgeon Jack Penn. The book was replete with photos of his figurative sculptures. Dr Bijlani did her graduation, post graduation and super specialisation in Plastic Surgery from Grant Medical College.
